Caring for Your Candles

Tips to Make Your Heart & Home Products Last Longer

At Heart & Home, we believe that candles are more than just a source of light or fragrance—they create ambiance, spark memories, and bring warmth to your space. To ensure you get the most out of your favorite Heart & Home candles, follow these simple tips for proper care and maintenance.

1. Trim the Wood Wick for a Clean Burn

One of the most important steps in candle care is trimming the wood wick before each burn. A wick that is too long can cause excessive soot, uneven burning, and a flickering flame. Keep the wood wick trimmed to about 1/8 inch to ensure a clean and steady burn.

2. Let the Wax Pool

For an even burn and to prevent tunneling, allow the wax to melt completely across the surface of the candle during each use. This process, which typically takes one to two hours, ensures that your candle burns evenly and lasts longer.

3. Avoid Drafts

Placing your candle in a drafty area can cause the flame to flicker and burn unevenly. Keep your candle away from fans, air vents, and open windows to maintain a consistent flame and prevent wasted wax.

4. Extinguish with Care

Instead of blowing out your candle, use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wood wick into the melted wax and straighten it back up. This helps prevent smoking and keeps the wick primed for the next burn.

5. Store Candles Properly

To maintain the integrity of your candle’s fragrance and wax, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This prevents the wax from softening or discoloring over time.

6. Repurpose Your Jar

Once your candle has burned down to about 1/2 inch of wax, it’s time to safely retire it. Instead of discarding the jar, clean out any remaining wax and repurpose it for storage, décor, or even as a planter for small succulents!

By following these simple care tips, you can extend the life of your Heart & Home candles and continue to enjoy their warm glow and inviting aromas for as long as possible. Happy burning!
